Discover

Emmet Gowin never intended to start this project. Rather than saying Emmet Gowin discovering the beauty of moths, their subtle beauty found him and created this decades long exhibition that truly is a labor of love to nature.

Walk through the space exploring what’s behind each column. The beauty of moths really come to life when you take the moment to pause and admire their simple beauty.

Moths are drawn to light– as visitors walk a proximity sensor will brighten the corresponding lights.

Explore the space and discover your own moths. Be aware– moths are finnicky. Some moths only come out at certain times, or when certain conditions are met, if you want to find out more you should visit the Carnegie Museum of Art!

Final Reflections

Prototype with your hands

When I first prototyped the forest gallery experience I made each section too wide– I forgot just how small the moths are at the right scale. I couldn’t always see what people felt until I turned it from sketch to form.

Design the experience, then the space

What helped me make the space the most was not the question of what I wanted in the space, but what I wanted people to think or feel by the time they left.

There are opportunities for collaboration

When I think about interactions today, they are no longer just about one person. Through the web you can collaborate with groups of people across time and space.

Acknowledgements

To the invaluable feedback

Thank you to Daphne for guiding me through this experience. This was my first time trying to translate my vision to something more than a 2D image. There were a lot more moving parts than I expected, and your feedback helped ground me throughout the process. This project really changed how I think about spaces, and the experiences within them.
